Evergreens in Winter

 Evergreens in Winter

1-3-25

Starting at the horizon and looking upwards from there; I sketched groupings of trees that surround our house. Evergreens take center stage in January with pines being most abundant.

Tree Tops in Winter

Tree Tops in Winter

Tree Top Series 12-27-24

Recently I sketched a series of trees surrounding our house. I looked upwards to focus on the tops of the trees. I've posted the sketches here.

Tree Top Series 12-26-24

Twenty seven years ago, in 1998, many trees were destroyed throughout the area during a devastating ice storm. I remember seeing birch trees bending towards the ground. Robert Frost, in his poem, "Birches", writes..."Soon the sun's warmth makes them shed crystal shells." Here is a link to the poem called Birches

Sunset Point - Yarmouth, Maine

Sunset Point - Yarmouth, Maine

"Sunset Point" by Diana Johnson

Just a few months ago I was sitting on the sand painting this image. The sun was warm, the clouds were gently moved by a slight breeze.

Today, 5 months later, I was walking in the woods. The poem, “December Moon" by May Sarton came to mind. The poem starts with,

“Before going to bed
 After a fall of snow…”

Here is the link if you want to read this lovely poem. “December Moon” by May Sarton

Runaround Pond - Durham, Maine

 Runaround Pond - Durham, Maine

"Soft Autumn Day" by Diana Johnson

It is fun to remember the Autumn colors as I look out the window at grey, dark skies. Today is the day before the Winter Solstice and it feels like a good afternoon for a nap.

Runaround Pond is the "go to" place to enjoy a burst of color in October.  This recreation area has trails and canoe/ kayak access.

This painting is currently on view and available at Yarmouth Frame and Gallery

Broad Cove Reserve - Cumberland, Maine

Broad Cove Reserve - Cumberland, Maine

"Glimmer of Light" by Diana Johnson

One afternoon I met my painting buddies for a "paint out" at Broad Cove Reserve in Cumberland, Maine.  The tide was on its way out so we had plenty of time to sit on the beach before being chased by the water. I was fascinated by the bit of light shining onto the scene. This spot is lovely to visit. Here is a link for you: Broad Cove Reserve When you open the link you will have to use the search bar to find the Reserve information.

It has been over 8 months since I posted anything. I am going to delete the automatic email feature. If and when I post again you will not receive the post in your in box. The server that I use is a problem. Friends of mine have been hacked and there are too many ads so I am deleting it. I am not aware of a safe server.

I have one painting in the pastel show at the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden through July 15th. The gardens are so beautiful!

Full Moon Paintings

 Full Moon Paintings

Full Moon and Stars  Watercolor  Diana Johnson

With the Harvest Moon being today, September 20, 2021, I am putting together some of my "Moon" paintings. I would play Neil Young's Harvest Moon song to accompany this post if I could.

A while ago I spent some time in a playful mood with my watercolor paints.  After a base of deep blue paint, I then splattered opaque, light-colored paint to make "stars". Too fun!

Moon at Sunset   oil   Diana Johnson

Next I will share with you about one time my husband and I took the Sunset Cruise on Casco Bay. It had been reported that on a certain night there would be a full moon visible at sunset so we decided to see it by boat. The ferry took  us all around the islands. Opposite from the sun we could see the moon rise over the water. Then on the way back to Portland the sun started to set. Off to the side was an island with one white house on it. The sunset's illumination made it look golden. So cool!

Through the Trees  Pastel  Diana Johnson

Lastly I will tell you about my painting called, "Through the Trees". It is in my Etsy shop. On one of my evening walks I felt like I was being followed by the moon. Every time that I looked up the moon had seemingly shifted due to my perspective. Finally, I saw what looked like delicate filagree surrounding the moon as I looked through the tree branches.

So remember to look up and enjoy the moon!
